Germany. Trier - Koblenz line on 6th March 1971

I'd caught the German steam bug with my February trip to Rheine in North Germany. So it wasn't long before I set off on my own. Like the first trip it meant a half days leave from work on the Friday. Then, this time the boat train to Folkestone, a ferry to Calais and several trains to get me to Trier in time for the 07.42 semi fast train to Koblenz. At a time when traffic growth had meant some of the diesel locos previously operating that and other semifast and fast trains had gone elsewhere. Allowing the return of a handful of 01 class, two cylinder coal fired pacifics to return for their swan song. With the powerful three cylinder coal fired class 044 2-10-0 locos handing most freight.
