Austria: Wien and suburbs plus Vordernberg, 23rd to 25th March 1972

A superb Don Benn organised first trip to Austria, with two others joining us: Barry Young and Derek Hayward. Out and back on the Oostende Wien Express with a great deal packed into just three days. Runs on and photos of the remaining Wien steam loco surburban trains. 52 Class 2-10-0s on passenger and freight train duties and a 93 Class 2-6-2 tank loco. Then the first of what was to become many visits to the "Iron Mountain" rack railway from Vordernberg to Praebichl and Erzgebrige. With those wonderful 97 0-6-2t rack tanks very much in evidence. We also glimpsed and photographed a 2-6-2 tank loco shunting the steelworks at Leoben as we passed in our train home. And finally as we headed back into Belgium on the Wien-Oostende Express we managed a shot of two Belgium 0-6-0 steam locos as we sped past. A trip with enormous variety. Thanks Don!
