Germany: Saar and Mosel Valleys on 13th to 15th January 1972

The December trip to the cold and claggy Saar and Mosel with brother Don motivated me to a longer trip, mainly to the Mosel in January of 1972. I was keen to time the Eilzugs that the 023 Class 2-6-2's hauled from Saarbrucken to Trier, plus a last chance to time an 01 pacific on the Moselbahn: the work of those locos was due to end early in 1972. I can remember the trip very well. I stayed in a small hotel in Trier close to the station, and didn't feel well on Saturday morning. So sat on the platform at Trier watching freight trains pass through towards Ehrang behind 050 Class 2-10-0s. Before I felt well enough to catch a train up to Wengerohr to enjoy a sunny and very busy afternoon of German steam action.
